The organizing committee of the The International Conference on Halophilic Microorganisms – Halophiles 2019 is happy to announce that the next halophile meeting will be held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania during June 24-28, 2019.

The aim of Halophiles 2019 meeting is to gather scientists around the world to share their enthusiasm and catalyze new lines of research in ecology, physiology, biodiversity, genetics, biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology and evolutionary biology of salt-loving organisms or ‘halophiles’.

During The 12th International Conference on Halophilic Microorganisms “Halophiles 2019” (Cluj-Napoca, Romania, June 24 – 28, 2019,, the oral and poster sessions will traverse Taxonomy, Biodiversity, Biophysics, Ecology, Physiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Genomics, Biotechnology, and other fields. There will also be a joint meeting of the ICSP Subcommittees on ‘Taxonomy of Halobacteria’ and ‘Taxonomy of Halomonadaceae’.

Abstract Submission

Abstracts will be evaluated and registrants will be notified of acceptance of abstracts no later than May 1st, 2019.

Abstracts will be published only for registered participants who have paid the registration fee.


For accepted abstracts, payment deadlines will be:
EARLY payment by May 1st, 2019: 500 Euro (Regular), 250 Euro (Students).
LATE payment by June 1st, 2019: 650 Euro (Regular), 350 Euro (Students).

The conference fees will include: Conference materials (abstract book, printed program, badge, personalized gift); Meals and social events (between June 24-27, 2019): welcome dinner, coffee / tea breaks, 3 lunches, city tour, closing ceremony and farewell dinner.

Travel Grants


This meeting is selected by the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) to offer grants for congress participation for Early Career Researchers. A number of ten FEMS Early Career Scientist Meeting grants will be provided following acceptance of abstract and registration. The conditions for applying to these grants are posted on conference website (


The International Society for Salt Lake Research ( will sponsor the Halophiles 2019 symposium with two travel grants of US$ 500 each, for students or early career scientists up to the age of 35, who will present a talk or a poster at the meeting. The proceedings of Halophiles 2019 will be published in special issues of ‘Environmental Microbiology’, ‘Environmental Microbiology Reports’ and ‘FEMS Microbiology Letters’. Presenters of oral presentations and posters are invited to submit manuscripts, prepared in the correct formats based in the instructions for authors for those journals, no later than September 1st, 2019. Papers will be reviewed following the normal procedures, and the editors of the journals, assisted by a team of guest editors for the special issues, will decide which papers can be accepted for publication.

Cluj-Napoca is the 2nd largest city in Romania. It is well connected by motorways and airways with important European cities.
If you choose to travel by air, we recommend either direct flights to Cluj-Napoca (Avram Iancu International Airport,, or by flight connections through Bucharest (the capital city of Romania).
There are many hotels and hostels throughout the city that may be found and booked online (since the conference will take place at Grand Hotel Napoca maybe you would like to book a room here
